Balsam Dental

Home/About

A small practice with deep roots.

Family- and veteran-owned. Two doctors, one team, practicing together in downtown Waynesville since 2012.

Our story

Two Army dentists, one community.

Dr. Serene Nagia and Dr. Andrew Sharman met during active-duty service in the U.S. Army. Both graduated dental school in 2012 — Dr. Nagia from the University of Detroit Mercy, Dr. Sharman from the University of Buffalo. After their service ended, they practiced along the East Coast for several years before relocating to Western North Carolina.

They opened Balsam Dental in Waynesville in 2012 — named for the balsam trees of the surrounding mountains. The practice now serves patients across Haywood County and Western North Carolina, with the same two doctors who founded it.

How we work

Three things we believe.

01

Unhurried appointments.

Visits are scheduled with enough time to explain what's happening and answer questions. No rush.

02

Clear treatment plans.

Every exam ends with a written treatment plan — priorities, timing, and estimated costs in plain English.

03

Modern equipment.

Digital imaging, Primescan impressions, CEREC same-day crowns, and cone-beam 3D scanning, used routinely.

Doctor 01

Dr. Serene Nagia

DDS · University of Detroit Mercy, 2012 · U.S. Army Veteran

Detroit-raised. Earned her dental degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry in 2012 and served as an active-duty dentist in the U.S. Army — where she met her husband, Dr. Andrew Sharman.

During her service she cared for soldiers and military working dogs alike, performing extractions, root canals, and the kind of hands-on procedures that sharpen a dentist quickly. She has practiced along the East Coast since.

Clinically, she practices the full breadth of general dentistry, with a particular focus on dental implants — single-tooth restorations, implant-retained dentures, and full-arch reconstruction. Her approach is unhurried by design.

Doctor 02

Dr. Andrew Sharman

DDS · University of Buffalo, 2012 · U.S. Army Veteran

Buffalo-born, Buffalo-trained. Earned his dental degree from the University of Buffalo in 2012, completed his residency at Ft. Benning, and served as an active-duty dentist in the U.S. Army — earning his Jump Wings during service.

After the Army, he spent years caring for veterans at the Asheville VA Hospital before opening Balsam Dental with his wife, Dr. Serene Nagia. His clinical focus is comprehensive, restorative dentistry, with particular gratification in the slow, careful work of full-mouth rehabilitation.

Outside the office: fly fisherman, mountain explorer, Lucy and Lemon's favorite human, Buffalo Bills fan.
